I had a Dell Vostro 1500 with a nvidia graphics that did this.

It was overheating – got a laptop cooler and didn’t get it anymore…well most of the time…I don’t have the laptop anymore now.

I have seen this before. You need to remove your bios battery for an hour (or so). Make sure you write down _all_ your bios settings _before_ doing this however. Some computers have a reset key sequence–or even a “reset” key at the bottom.

I have near identical symptoms with my LCD TV, and it’s actually faulty hardware. (Something on the TV’s mainboard). For the TV, it’s not such a big deal, as the matrix lines only appear when the on-screen display is showing, and otherwise the colour is shot.

The cost to fix is the same as the cost to replace in my situation, so I’m just living with it for now.

That seems like an overheating GPU. Give it some thermal compound. If it’s old like you say, your warranty is over anyway.

I had this (or something that looked like this) problem on a Sony Vaio some years ago. My I advise to you is to start saving for a new laptop (unless it’s still covered by warranty), since I believe it’s a problem with the GPU/screen card. My screen died completely after some months.

Those saying that the problem is related to Ubuntu 9.10, please read carefully where the OP states that this problem also happens during POST (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power-on_self-test).
