Strange behavior in laptop LCD
November 10th, 2009 — roaksoaxYesterday I was working on my old laptop and I had to move location, so I disconnected my laptop from the power outlet in the wall. After doing this, my screen started flickering and showing strange lines, from time to time different colors and stuff like that. This is the second time that happens to me… however I got it fixed the first time and I do not know how.
The same behavior is shown during booting process (POST), loading process and well… even when I connect to my laptop through VNC. I have not connected it yet to an external monitor because I do not have cables. You can see a screenshot here:
If anyone know what could be wrong, or a possible fix, let me know.

I’ve had that happen to me before. For me it means a reboot is in order. It seems to be software related. I remember having the issue with the graphics driver at one point a while ago and I just ended up using something else.

I think that the problem is in the hardware memory of your video card, I hope that I’m wrong but I’ve seen that before.

Is that laptop a Dell? Most of my workmates that have a Dell suffered from a similar problem, and IIRC it was a hardware failure.

My Dell Latitude C-610 did that when I installed Ubuntu 9.10, but it doesn’t happen under 9.04 or 8.04.xLTS.

its either the drivers or a over heating video card * but its just a shot in the dark mind you

It’s the drivers because like I said, it’s only on 9.10, not 9.04 or 8.04.xLTS.

Happens occasionally to me on my smaller laptop. I use a IBM Thinkpad X31 happens like 1 out of 25 times I disconnect.
Any suggestions are welcome

If you have a VIA graphics card you may try to add an Option “NoAGPDMA” onto your /etc/X11/xorg.conf. That fixed my problem on my notebook.

Those saying that the problem is related to Ubuntu 9.10, please read carefully where the OP states that this problem also happens during POST (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power-on_self-test).

I had this (or something that looked like this) problem on a Sony Vaio some years ago. My I advise to you is to start saving for a new laptop (unless it’s still covered by warranty), since I believe it’s a problem with the GPU/screen card. My screen died completely after some months.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:11 AM
That seems like an overheating GPU. Give it some thermal compound. If it’s old like you say, your warranty is over anyway.

Looks like broken video memory to me. I had this once, too.

I have near identical symptoms with my LCD TV, and it’s actually faulty hardware. (Something on the TV’s mainboard). For the TV, it’s not such a big deal, as the matrix lines only appear when the on-screen display is showing, and otherwise the colour is shot.
The cost to fix is the same as the cost to replace in my situation, so I’m just living with it for now.

I have seen this before. You need to remove your bios battery for an hour (or so). Make sure you write down _all_ your bios settings _before_ doing this however. Some computers have a reset key sequence–or even a “reset” key at the bottom.
Good luck!

I had a Dell Vostro 1500 with a nvidia graphics that did this.
It was overheating – got a laptop cooler and didn’t get it anymore…well most of the time…I don’t have the laptop anymore now.
